Legal Separation
For various reasons, parties may decide that a divorce is not the best route for them at a particular time. In a legal separation, the Court can enter orders dividing and awarding the use of property, awarding support alimony, determining child custody and visitation, and awarding child support. Since a legal separation in Oklahoma is handled in the same manner as divorce cases, the procedures and pleadings are essentially identical. The difference being that at the end of the case, the parties remain legally married. The grounds for a legal separation are the same as those for a divorce, and a Petition for Legal Separation can be amended to a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage at any time.
