Victim Protective Orders

A Victim Protective Order (VPO) in Oklahoma is separate from all other orders entered by the family courts. VPOs involve cases of alleged domestic violence (either actual harm or threats of harm), stalking, or harassment, and apply to family relationships.

A VPO might be necessary if there is violence or the threat of violence immediately prior to the divorce filing. If violence or threats occur after the filing of the divorce, then a VPO should be at least considered by the lawyer and the client.

A lawyer can offer assistance, but clients must file a VPO themselves. If the Court determines that the facts justify a VPO, the judge will customize an order to try to stop the conduct. A VPO has much greater consequences than other orders entered by the divorce court even though they may appear very similar.
